Geloofstraditie's zijn door mensen geschapen, hoezeer zij ook onder de
invloed van de Geest tot stand kwamen. Zij zijn daarom niet onfeilbaar,
en om blindelings in hen te vertrouwen is een vorm van afgoderij. Een
vermaning uit de Leer en Verbonden aangaande bepaalde (niet-HLD) schriftuur
en traditie, geldt daarom t.o.v. alle geloofsbeschouwingen, inclusief
die van het Mormonisme: "Er zijn vele dingen in vervat, die niet
waar zijn" (LV 91:2), en moeten inderdaad
worden gezien als "geboden van mensen" (LV
46:7).
Een dergelijke realiteit vereist van ons dat we ons geestelijk onderscheidingsvermogen
gebruiken in de geloofsbenadering. Waar in onze geloofstraditie horen
we de geest tot ons spreken? Waar horen we er menselijke onwetendheid
en angst, vooroordeel of machtstreven doorklinken? Pogingen om ons onderscheidingsvermogen
te gebruiken worden door critici vaak verward met religieuze willekeur,
d.w.z. het aanvaarden van zaken die ons aangenaam stemmen. Geestelijk
onderscheidingsvermogen is echter een kwestie van persoonlijke openbaring,
niet van persoonlijke voorkeur. Er zijn schriftuurlijke aanbevelingen
die ons aanraden ons geestelijk onderscheidingsvermogen te gebruiken:
"Onderzoek alles, behoud het goede" (I
Tessalonicenzen 5:21) en wegen "waardoor gij kunt weten of
enige bediening van God is" (LV 129:9).
Aan de andere kant is ook ons geestelijk onderscheidingsvermogen niet
onfeilbaar. We moeten ons dus kritisch opstellen t.o.v. de geloofstraditie,
maar ook gewillig zijn om te worden onderwezen. Omdat we geloven in persoonlijke
openbaring, geeft ons dat een mate van vertrouwen in onze overtuiging
en oordeelsvorming. Echter, door voortdurend te luisteren, ondervinden
we dat de Geest ons wil onderwijzen d.m.v. zaken die deel uitmaken van
onze geloofstraditie, hoezeer we op dit moment misschien ook ervaren dat
ze verre van God's wil verwijderd zijn.
